Appointed to die and face judgement” is only half the sentence — the main point follows! (Hebrews 9:27–28)

Below are two verses — but one sentence. I’ve quoted the first part of this sentence often — but it wasn’t until yesterday that I got the author’s point. Here’s the sentence:

And just as people are appointed to die once, and then to face judgment, so also, after Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many, to those who eagerly await him he will appear a second time, not to bear sin but to bring salvation.

Heb 9:27–28

My paraphrase of the point the author was making would be something like this:

As true as it is — that people die and face judgement for the way they lived their life — so also, it’s true that for those who are awaiting Jesus in death, He will deliver salvation to them (because their sin has already been dealt with — once for all).
